Police arrest gunman who barricaded himself inside a property in Mijas.
The 21-year-old man who barricaded himself inside a property in La Cala de Mijas on the Costa del Sol yesterday afternoon (Monday) has been arrested after a tense standoff with police. He allegedly fired several shots at Guardia Civil officers who were trying to negotiate with him, and one of them was injured in the foot.
Police say that the gunman is known to them as last October he was shot five times in an apparent revenge shooting in Doña Lola in Calahonda. He was left paralysed from the waist down in the incident and is now confined to a wheelchair.
The detainee, who is Spanish of Moroccan origin, has been arrested several times by police for serious offences since he was a teenager.
The alarm was raised by family members when they realised that the man was armed, so they called the Guardia Civil headquarters in Mijas for help.
From there, a unit was dispatched to try and get the young man to turn himself in, with officers from the rapid action group (GAR) at the scene to negotiate, but he responded by opening fire on them.
The tense situation made it necessary to cordon off the entire area while a specialist intervention unit (UEI) was mobilised and sent from Madrid to the address in the Costa del Sol, who intervened and arrested him.
