19-year-old footballer killed in a car accident while heading to a match
Paula Andrea Tellado Gómez, a 19-year-old female footballer from Sporting Club San Mateo, died yesterday (Sunday) in a tragic car accident after she lost control of her car near Ponteareas, in Pontevedra, according to reports from La Voz de Galicia.
The incident took place at kilometre four of the PO-254 road, at around 9:50 yesterday morning, and the circumstances leading to the accident are still unknown.
After veering off the road, her car plunged down an embankment and collided with trees before being spotted by a passing cyclist who discovered the vehicle and alerted the emergency services.
According to reports, the young athlete was trapped inside the car for approximately 20 minutes until medical services could extract her lifeless body from the wrecked vehicle.
The young footballer was on her way to meet several of her teammates to get a coach to Santiago to play in the scheduled match for the day. As of now, the club has not released any official statement regarding the young athlete's death, an event that has deeply shaken the Galician football community.
