A two-year-old girl dies after drowning in a swimming pool in Tarragona
A 2-year-old girl died after drowning in a private pool at a villa in L'Ametlla de Mar (Tarragona) on Tuesday, where she and her family, of German and Russian origin, were spending their holidays.
As confirmed by the Mossos d'Esquadra yesterday (Wednesday), the girl accidentally fell into the pool and it was her sister who found her at the bottom and alerted the family.
An alert was received at 7:30pm and, despite the fact that paramedics from the Emergency Medical System (SEM) tried to revive her, their efforts were in vain and she died.
A black summer.
Spain is experiencing a true black summer in terms of drownings. In June alone, 57 people died from this cause, the second worst figure in 9 years.
According to data compiled by the National Drowning Report (INA) prepared by the Royal Spanish Federation of Rescue and First Aid, only in 2017 have there been more drownings in Spain, with 70 drownings, ahead of 2016, with 56, in 2019 (50), 2015 (43), 2020 (41), 2021 (35), and 2018 (34).
The upward trend in deaths in Spanish waters this year is confirmed, after the same situation occurred last May, with 33 deaths, surpassed only by May 2016, with 54 fatal drownings.
People are requested to act responsibly in pools and the sea and to never take their eyes off their children regardless of their age and swimming ability.
