Airport ground crew strikes during the December bank holidays are cancelled
The strikes by ground crew and handlers at Aena airports across Spain and the Canary Islands for December 5th and 10th, was called off yesterday (Wednesday), after a meeting between the relevant parties held before the Interconfederal Service of Mediation and Arbitration (SIMA).
The UGT union called for this strike in protest of the situation arising from the resolution of the tender for this service, claiming that "the foundation of the tender has raised more uncertainty regarding job stability in the sector”.
UGT emphasized, at the time of announcing the strike, that Aena had still not "established a real, specific, and clear commitment" on how to deal with covenant breaches, merely acting as a "manager of awards."
Thus, they argued that over the last seven years, a series of labour breaches have occurred by "all the companies involved," reflected in thousands of demands, collective conflicts, and strike calls.
Additionally, they highlighted that licenses for the service have been awarded to companies already violating the labour agreement.
