An unexpected market boosts Benidorm's occupancy after a drop in British tourists
Benidorm saw occupancy rates in August nearly match pre-pandemic levels, despite a drop in its primary source market, the British. From August 16th to the 31st, the destination recorded a 92.4% occupancy rate, coming within just 2 points of the figures from 2019, according to data from the Hosbec Hotel Association.
In terms of origin, international tourists account for 59% of the total, while domestic tourism makes up the remaining 41%. Notably, an unexpected market for Benidorm, the Portuguese, has shown remarkable strength, making up 14.1% of the occupancy share, and compensating for the decline in British visitors, which now stands at 29.6%, compared to over 40% in July.
The British market still leads the list of foreign nationalities at 29.6%, followed by the Portuguese at 14.1%, French at 2.3%, Italian at 2%, Dutch at 1.8%, Irish at 1.6%, Romanian at 1.5%, and Belgian at 1.4%. Other source markets are less than 1%.
At the beginning of September, the destination already had an 87% booking rate, with a guarantee of surpassing these figures, getting closer to the 90% mark once again, partly thanks to the Benidorm Pride Festival which takes place from September 4th to 10th.
