Another isolated depression DANA to bring rain across Spain
A new isolated depression at high levels, known as DANA, is set to sweep across Spain, bringing showers to various regions, according to forecasts by the State Meteorological Agency, AEMET. The eastern parts of the country and the Balearic Islands are expected to experience stronger and more persistent rain.
Tuesday 19th September 2023
The DANA will be centred around the Gulf of Cádiz, resulting in increased atmospheric instability, particularly during the afternoon and evening. Stormy showers are forecast for Melilla and eastern Andalucia, with impacts extending to the Region of Murcia, the southern part of the Valencian Community, and Castilla-La Mancha.
Maximum temperatures are expected to rise across most of mainland Spain, except for the Mediterranean regions, where temperatures will decrease. Anticipated values range from 25°C to 28°C in much of the southern half of the country, the Ebro Valley, the Mediterranean, and the Canary Islands.
Wednesday 20th September 2023
Wednesday is expected to bring heavy rainfall accompanied by hail along the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic archipelago. Certain coastal areas of the Valencian Community, Catalonia, Ibiza, and Formentera could also be affected.
Maximum temperatures are predicted to drop significantly in most regions on Wednesday, with experts describing it as a cooler day for the season. In some areas, temperatures may only reach 25°C, while parts of the eastern interior could see temperatures 5 to 10°C below the seasonal norm.
Thursday 21st September 2023
On Thursday, maximum temperatures in cities like Valladolid, Ciudad Real, Badajoz, and Madrid are expected to remain below 25°C, with Madrid potentially reaching a maximum of 19°C. These temperatures are notably lower than those seen in eastern Europe where temperatures could reach 25°C, as reported by Meteored.
In several inland areas, including Extremadura, western Andalucia, the Community of Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, and Aragón, maximum temperatures on Thursday could be 5 to 10°C below the seasonal average.
AEMET noted that DANA is expected to move away from mainland Spain by Thursday, possibly leaving early morning showers in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
Friday 22nd September 2023
Friday is anticipated to bring more stable weather, though remnants of the cold front may still affect northern regions of the country. Clear skies will develop, paving the way for a stable weekend across Spain. While Friday's temperatures will remain cool, a general rise in temperatures is expected over the weekend, particularly in the northern half of the country, reaching values more typical for this time of year.
