Balearic Islands to approve law allowing sealing of illegal tourist rental apartments
The President of the Balearic Islands Government, Marga Prohens, has announced that a law allowing the sealing of illegal tourist apartments will be approved "imminently." This means that the authorities responsible for ordering these closures will be the island councils (Cabildos).
As reported by the Ibiza and Formentera Newspaper, Prohens made this statement during the Nit del Turisme event and stated that the measure would be approved next week.
He emphasized that the Balearic Islands have a tourism sector that prioritizes quality and sustainability. To achieve this, she stated, it is necessary to "combat illegal tourism rentals by providing all the necessary tools and collaborating with the councils to fight against this intrusion."
This is a long-awaited measure by the Ibiza Cabildo, as highlighted by President Prohens herself. "In Ibiza, there is a problem with those who take advantage of such a powerful name.”
“The Cabildo will have this legal framework to start sealing illegal apartments. It is going against an illegal economic activity, similar to sealing any business that lacks the necessary permits. This intrusion causes a lot of harm and disrupts the housing market," warned the president.
