Benidorm's hotel occupancy soars to 80% for Halloween
Halloween is only a relatively recent phenomenon in Spain, as being a Latin country the Day of the Dead on November 1st, which is a bank holiday, is more recognised and celebrated. However, it is becoming increasingly popular with visitors from other countries who are taking advantage of it to get away.
Hotel occupancy in Benidorm stands at 80% this weekend, and we are set to experience some "spooky" days due to this annual celebration. Although Halloween night is celebrated on October 31st. This year, that date falls on a Tuesday, and November 1st will be a holiday, but not a year when there's a long weekend.
As confirmed by industry sources, the festivities will be moved to this weekend instead, the last weekend of October. To make this happen, hotels and hospitality establishments have been influenced by the eerie atmosphere of the "scariest" night and have decorated their premises accordingly.
"Hotels are increasingly themed, and significant effort is put into these dates," said Fede Fuster, President of Hosbec. He also added, "This year, almost everything will focus on the weekend." According to the hotel association, last-minute bookings have driven tourist occupancy up to 80%, a commendable figure that maintains the pace of recent weeks.
In Benidorm, some accommodations have offered all-inclusive packages for this weekend, including accommodation and thematic dinners. Hotels have brought out mummies and skeletons to decorate their receptions and restaurants and will offer activities related to the eerie world of this holiday, suitable for all ages.
“Halloween is bringing more people to Benidorm every year” said Alex Fratini, Vice President of the Association of Bars, Restaurants, Cafés, and Nightlife. "It has always been a good event for the sector, but in recent years, acceptance has grown significantly," he added. And although some might think it's only a party for the young, "it's for families as well as groups of friends, including older ones."
