British man arrested in the UK after international manhunt for Costa del Sol stabbing
A British man who has been on the run after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend and then dumping her at the side of the road in Mijas just under three weeks ago, has been arrested at an ‘undisclosed location’ in the UK in the last 48 hours according to the National Police.
Spanish police made the 'lawless' member of the travelling community, Jason McInerney, one of their top priorities after the incident in the Costa del Sol and issued an international arrest warrant against him.
35-year-old McInerney is an ex-con who fled a UK dock where he was being tried for attempted murder after biting a policeman on the nose in 2008, and committed a string of crimes including burglaries and grievous bodily harm during his five months on the run following his violent court escape. He was only released from prison last year after serving almost 15 years behind bars.
Spanish government representative, Pedro Fernandez, confirmed national and international arrest warrants were in put place before McInerney was apprehended in Britain, saying at the time: “We hope to apprehend the suspect as soon as possible. We are aware he has a criminal record and has been involved in significant criminal activity. He was in prison for a long period of time in England and will be probably able to flee Spain as he seems to have the infrastructure in place to do so.”
He also confirmed the stabbing victim had returned to the UK after hospital treatment for her “serious” injuries, although whether she jumped out of the vehicle where the stabbing occurred while it was still moving or that the alleged aggressor pushed her out is still being investigated.
