Five arrests made for 23 house burglaries and 2 bank robberies stealing 150,000 euros
The Guardia Civil has arrested five people who constituted a criminal gang dedicated to burglaries in homes across the province of Toledo, where they have stolen jewellery and watches worth more than 150,000 euros. Four of these individuals were also responsible for the attack on two banks in the Toledo town of Borox, where they used a mechanical digger to break open the ATMs to steal the cash from inside.
The first ATM robbery occurred at the end of May this year when four hooded individuals arrived with a stolen digger and a car. One of them used the heavy machinery to rip the ATM from its foundation, while the others waited to steal the money from its interior.
However, upon the noise made by the digger, neighbours alerted the Guardia Civil to the robbery, and the culprits fled empty-handed.
Just two weeks later, employing the same modus operandi, the same members of the gang attempted to break into another ATM in the same town. This time, the culprits managed to extract the bank machine, dragging it away with the digger but abandoning it a short distance away.
Officers who arrived at the scene shortly afterwards found the cash machine concealed but unopened, and it still had 4,000 euros inside it that the thieves were unable to get their hands on.
The investigation by the Guardia Civil in Toledo confirmed that these four individuals were part of a criminal group, who along with a fifth member, had been involved in house burglaries since 2021.
On this occasion, they escalated their criminal activities to rob banks, during which law enforcement officers managed to identify all the culprits and link them to at least 23 crimes, including bank break-ins, home burglaries, vehicle thefts, and drug trafficking, among others.
Among the house burglaries, two stand out in which they succeeded in stealing two shotguns in one case and a pistol in another.
Having gathered sufficient evidence and after weeks of investigation, law enforcement officers arrested all five members of the gang and brought them before the judicial authorities. Four home searches were conducted, leading to the recovery of 2,000 euros in cash.
