Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé will have a street or square in Barcelona
Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé are to have a street or square named after them in Barcelona, the city that brought them together for the opening of the 1992 Olympic Games. The City Council is working to create a space in Freddie's memory in the new development of the Plaça de les Glòries.
This was announced by the councillor for sport, David Escudé, who said that the decision is now in the hands of the Nomenclature Commission. He explained that this new memorial space is a mandate from the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, who is “a massive Queen fan” and originally proposed this in 2018.
The proposal to dedicate a square or a street in the city to Freddie Mercury was approved in the municipal plenary session last March, following a request from Cs councillor, Noemí Martín.
Escudé also confirmed that Barcelona City Council will participate in the auction of Freddie Mercury memorabilia to obtain the original manuscript of the song 'Barcelona', which starts at around 20,000 euros, and for which they have a public appraisal report that has not been revealed as they don’t want to give any clues to rival bidders.
