Mallorcan residents hang ‘beach closed’ signs to stop foreign tourists
The residents of Manacor in Mallorca say they are tired of the "mass tourism that the island is suffering from" and have taken things into their own hands. Members of the Manacor Caterva Association, have put up signs in English warning of dangers on beaches, with a message underneath in Catalan confirming that they are open and completely safe.
The signs vary in message from the beach being closed to warnings of polluted waters and rockfalls to the presence of jellyfish. These are some of the warnings that appear on the signs in English, where below you can also see "Platja oberta" which means beach open, and in small print, also in Catalan, a brief explanation that the sign is aimed at "foreigners".
The signs have been placed at various bays and beaches in the area, including Cala Morlanda, Cala Petita, Porto Cristo, Cala Murta, Cala Magraner, and Cala Bota.
