Man arrested after smashing up a church while shouting 'God does not exist'
In a shocking incident that unfolded within the peaceful confines of the Pedregalejo neighbourhood in Malaga, a man was arrested on Monday after disrupting a morning mass and causing significant damage to the Corpus Christi church on Calle Ventura de la Vega, as parishioners gathered for the 9:30am service.
The disruption began when the unidentified individual, now in police custody, grew increasingly agitated during the church service. In a display of destructive fury, he started vandalising the interior of the parish church while vociferously proclaiming, "God does not exist." He went on to utter derogatory remarks against the church itself and even issued chilling death threats.
The turmoil caught the attention of local authorities, prompting the arrival of the Local Police, who upon encountering the belligerent individual on the scene, tried to apprehend him. However, he managed to evade their grasp, fleeing onto Avenida Juan Sebastián Elcano. After a brief pursuit, the 45-year-old man was eventually restrained and taken into custody.
One courageous parishioner recounted the ordeal to the police, revealing that the perpetrator callously hurled a crucifix and a depiction of the Virgin Mary onto the floor. He further wreaked havoc by damaging church furniture, including numerous chairs, a candelabra, and various glass items. Shockingly, when the eyewitness attempted to intervene, the assailant reportedly threatened his life, menacingly declaring, "I'm going to cut your throat."
Reflecting on the incident, Parish Priest José López Solorzano expressed his sorrow over the estimated damage, which is projected to exceed €3,000. "Though the monetary cost is significant, the emotional toll on our congregation is immeasurable," he lamented.
This incident has left the local community shaken and serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and security measures in places of worship. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter, and the suspect will face legal consequences for his actions.
