Man arrested for allegedly raping and robbing a homeless woman in Girona
The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police force, have apprehended a 39-year-old man in Barcelona this morning (Friday) with multiple prior convictions for allegedly sexually assaulting and robbing a homeless woman in Girona.
As reported by the Diari de Girona and confirmed by the ACN, the incident took place on Saturday, September 2nd, at around 9:30pm in the old quarter of the city of Girona.
The victim had gone to the La Sopa social centre to seek food and meet a friend. However, the assailant, who was also a user of the social centre, verbally abused her and forced her to leave. Shortly afterwards, he followed the woman to a city park where she had been sleeping for the past few nights. There, he physically attacked and sexually assaulted her, even attempting to suffocate her on seven occasions, according to the DdG (Diari de Girona).
Finally, the victim managed to escape and sought help at the centre, where she explained to the staff what had happened. The alleged assailant managed to flee, and it was only nearly a week later that the Mossos were able to arrest him in Barcelona.
In her statement, the victim revealed that she and the man were already acquainted and had crossed paths before. She also confessed that the man had physically assaulted her on previous occasions by punching her in the chest, though she had not reported it at the time. The man is expected to appear in court in the next few days.
In response to the incident, the judge ordered a search and capture warrant for the suspect and imposed a restraining order of 500 metres from the victim. The judge noted that there is a "real risk" that the suspect may approach the victim again to harm her, as he has no known address.
