Monarch's resurrection stalled due to insufficient funds
The announced resurrection of Monarch, the oldest charter airline in the UK, will have to wait because although they do intend to start operations, the new owners do not have sufficient funds to do so.
According to Travelmole, the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) has not yet been applied for by Monarch Airlines Limited, as confirmed by the British Civil Aviation Authority, and the process to grant this permit usually takes between 12 and 18 months.
The new company has pledged to “usher in a new era for one of the UK’s favourite travel brands” on its website and social media profiles, but this has now been replaced by a statement on the website letsmonarch.co.uk saying that the relaunch had been halted due to a lack of funds.
Monarch went bankrupt in October 2017 and was involved in a major repatriation process for stranded tourists. It hopes to resume operations by offering flights and package holidays.
Monarch’s new colour scheme was revealed last week.
Before its disappearance, Monarch was the UK’s fifth-largest airline carrying up to six million passengers a year, and operated flights to 12 Spanish airports: Ibiza, Menorca, Palma, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife South, Alicante, Almería, Barcelona, Madrid, and Málaga.
The new company revealed the new livery for the planes last week and claims they will continue with their plans to be flying by the end of 2024.
