Mother abandons 14-month-old baby on a street who tests positive for cocaine
The Local Police have arrested a 41-year-old woman in Elche for abandoning her 14-month-old baby on the street. The infant, who was taken to hospital, where he has been admitted by his grandmother, tested positive for cocaine. According to the Elche Council, the mother left her child with anyone who would have him, even overnight, while she went out.
On July 10th, police were summoned to Calle Antonio Mora Antón where they saw a homeless woman carrying a baby in her arms, and after speaking to her, found out that the child's mother habitually left him her without food or nappies and that she didn't know what to do with him.
Two other people have also come forward saying that the baby stayed with them several times a week, even to sleep, since they felt sorry for the helpless child, and the situation he found himself in.
Acting on this, agents took the minor to the paediatric unit of the Vinalopó Hospital for evaluation. After hearing what was going on, the boys aunt went to the hospital, and told the police that his mother was a cocaine user and breastfed him, and also claimed that she fed him cakes and sugary juices.
While the officers were taking statements, the baby's mother appeared at the hospital, visibly under the influence of drugs. She agreed to have a voluntary drug test and tested positive for cocaine.
After further questioning, they found out that she has four other children, three of which are over 18 and one younger. The younger son is in good health being under the care of one of the mother's brothers.
After the interview with the pediatrician, he reported that the infant had tested positive for cocaine, in addition to having the beginnings of pneumonia, so was admitted to hospital under the care of his grandmother. Given these facts, the woman was arrested and taken into custody where she has been charged with abandonment and passed to the Prosecutor's Office.
