Panic after masked gunman opens fire at a popular restaurant in Puerto Banús
The National Police are investigating an incident involving a masked gunman yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) in Puerto Banús on the Costa del Sol, who opened fire on a restaurant near the Cristamar shopping centre using a semi-automatic weapon causing panic among the people who were nearby.
The incident happened at around 6:00pm when the gunman got out of a car wearing a balaclava carrying an automatic weapon, and opened fire into the restaurant, before getting back into the car and fleeing the scene.
It appears that the shooting could be related to a forest fire that happened this afternoon in Marbella, which witnesses reported just a few minutes after the shooting incident, at around 6.08pm, although this has not been definitely confirmed by the police.
Several people called the emergency services to warn that they could see flames in the Benavolá area, located a short distance from the scene of the shooting, where a burned-out BMW was found.
The Junta's Infoca brigade of specialist firefighters managed to stabilise the forest fire at around 7:30pm, after ground teams and aircraft were mobilised. The investigators will have to determine whether, as all indications suggest, the vehicle fire, that caused the forest fire, could have been started by those involved in the shooting.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported and the police investigations are ongoing, and at this stage no arrests have been made yet either.
