Petrol and diesel prices go up again for the third week in a row
According to the latest data published by the EU Oil Bulletin, fuel prices in Spain have increased again over the last week. This is the third consecutive price rise, even though the increases are small. Petrol went up by 0.38% to 1.594€/litre, while diesel hit 1.424€/litre, an increase of 0.49%.
According to reports released yesterday (Thursday), the figures are calculated based on the average prices collected for the week between June 6th and 12th from more than 11,400 petrol stations across the country.
Despite the increases, the current average price of petrol is still 16.85% below what it was a year ago when it stood at 1,941€/litre in mainland Spain. Diesel is also 21.02% lower than it was at this point last year when it cost 1,876€/litre on average.
In both those cases, the price included the 20 cents per litre discount that was implemented by the government from 1st April 2022, to combat the financial consequences of the war in Ukraine, and was subsequently retracted at the end of the year.
Today, filling a 55-litre tank with 95 octane petrol will cost motorists €87.67 which is €17.76 less compared to last year. Similarly, to fill up with diesel would cost €78.32, which is €20.84 less than last year.
Since the 20-cent discount from the government finished at the end of December, the behaviour of fuel prices in Spain has been up and down. Petrol began 2023 at a lower price than diesel but has risen by 15.26% since then. Whereas, diesel has done the opposite and has dropped in price by 2.47% since the start of this year.
Compared to the rest of Europe, fuel prices in Spain are still below the average of other countries, with the average price of petrol at 1,729€/litre and diesel at 1,552€/litre.
