Pick up the puppy poop or pay the penalty!
The Fuengirola City Council have launched a new campaign this week to raise awareness and remind dog owners that it is their responsibility to pick up their pets’ excrement from public streets and pavements.
The Councillor for Cleaning, Javier Hidalgo, explained that over 200 posters are being put up around the town, particularly in areas where people take their dogs the most, and where the problem is the worst.
These posters are reminders for dog owners to fulfil their obligations to pick up their pet's poop or risk fines ranging from 301 to 1,500 euros.
“Regardless of how diligently our services clean and sweep the streets every day, without the collective effort, these efforts will not be enough,” said Hidalgo, who also stressed the importance of pet owners carrying a bottle of water mixed with vinegar to clean and sterilise ‘un-scoopable’ faeces.
He sees the effort to keep the streets clean and bacteria-free as a collective effort by all of us, in which the council, residents, and visitors to Fuengirola, should all be conscious of and take part.
“Our aim is to maintain our position as one of the cleanest cities in Spain, and this is an objective that all of us must strive to achieve,” he concluded.
