Rain and storms hit the south coast of Spain
Spain is finally receiving the much-needed respite from a prolonged period of scorching heat and months of drought. While the rain brings relief to many regions, residents of the Manilva area in the Malaga province, are grappling with the harsh reality that the saying 'when it rains, it pours' is quite fitting for their current situation.
A relentless storm has engulfed the Manilva/Casares skies since the early hours of this morning (Tuesday 9th January), unleashing hours of torrential rain accompanied by dark clouds and thunder.
Unfortunately, some residents are facing challenges, with garages flooding and households experiencing power cuts as a result of the downpour. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, citing a number of reported small accidents due to low visibility and slippery roads in the area.
Despite the temporary inconveniences, the storm is expected to subside before nightfall. This rain is, in fact, a cause for celebration, considering the severe drought Spain endured throughout 2023.
The drought, ranked as the ninth most expensive climate disaster in the world per capita last year, cost €45.50 per Spaniard. The welcomed relief from the current storm is hoped to pave the way for more showers across Spain, contributing to the nation's ongoing efforts to combat the disastrous drought that plagued 2023.
