Rain and storms loom over Spain for the upcoming weekend
As we approach the weekend, Spain is bracing for widespread rain and storms, accompanied by a drop in temperatures. The State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has issued alerts across numerous provinces, signalling potentially severe weather conditions across the country.
Yesterday, AEMET placed 13 provinces under an orange alert, signalling a high risk of storms. Specifically, Granada and Jaén in Andalucia faced the threat of storms, while Aragon, Teruel, and the Balearic Islands are at risk of experiencing both rain and storms. Additionally, the Balearic Islands and the southeast region of Spain could encounter hazy conditions, with the possibility of mild showers.
Yellow alerts were issued for Ciudad Real and Cuenca in Castilla-La Mancha, as well as Ávila and Segovia in Castilla y León, and Barcelona, Gerona, and Tarragona in Catalonia.
In Extremadura, Badajoz was identified as being at risk due to storms, while in the Valencian Community, the provinces of Alicante, Castellón, and Valencia, along with the Community of Madrid, were also warned of the potential for rain and storms.
Today, Friday, is anticipated to be a wet day throughout Spain, as per AEMET's forecast. Rain is expected in the Mediterranean area from the early hours, with the potential for stormy conditions that could bring persistent rainfall, particularly in the Valencian Community, Alicante, the Catalan coast, and parts of the Balearic Islands.
While the rainfall is also predicted to be significant in the mainland's interior, it may not be as intense as in the Mediterranean. However, some areas could experience locally strong showers, possibly accompanied by hail in parts of the central and southern regions.
Temperatures are expected to drop in the southern half and the Mediterranean but will rise in the Cantabrian Sea region. In cities like Oviedo, Santander, Bilbao, and San Sebastián, maximum temperatures of 28°C to 30°C are anticipated. In other parts of the country, temperatures will range between 25°C and 30°C.
According to weather experts, the influence of low-pressure systems will persist into Saturday, leading to continued atmospheric instability and frequent stormy showers. These showers are likely to be more abundant in the western half of the country, with the Balearic Islands and the southeast expected to see less impact. There is also a possibility of some rainfall in the northern Canary Islands.
The Atlantic storm's influence will continue into Sunday, with areas such as the Pyrenees, the centre, and northwest of Spain facing the potential for locally strong showers. Rainfall is expected to be weaker in Castilla y León, Extremadura, and the Central and Iberian Mountains, but the possibility of rain affecting most of the country during the day cannot be ruled out.
As Spain prepares for a wet and stormy weekend, residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and exercise caution while travelling or engaging in outdoor activities.
