Ryanair plans expansion with five new bases in Spain
In a bold move, Ryanair's CEO, Eddie Wilson, has unveiled the airline's ambitious plan to open five new bases in Spain, though the specific airports remain undisclosed. However, the realisation of this expansion hinges on AENA's response to the airline's plea for a reversal of the announced increase in airport fees for 2024.
Despite AENA surpassing pre-pandemic profits, the airport operator has declared an upcoming hike in airport fees.
During his address at the Hotusa Explora 2024 forum, organised by the hotel group of the same name, Wilson emphasised that Ryanair’s decision to invest in Spain was based on the anticipation of maintaining existing tariff levels until the 2026-2027 period. Therefore, he underlined the need for "certainty" in pricing to make Ryanair's investment plan a relaity.
The head of the Irish low-cost carrier reminded stakeholders that he recently presented the company's proposal to President Pedro Sánchez and Minister of Transport Óscar Puente, aiming for a 40% increase in air traffic. "We have the planes, but we need incentives," Wilson asserted.
As the low-cost airline lays out its vision for expansion, the ball is now in AENA's court to address the call for assurances and potentially unlock a new phase of growth for Ryanair within the Spanish aviation landscape.
