Semi-naked activists protest against bullfighting in Mallorca
A group of activists from AnimaNaturalis and CAS International stripped to their underwear in Palma to demand an end to bullfighting in the Balearic Islands. As the bullfighting season started in the Plaza de Toros in Palma, the animal rights group, AnimaNaturalis, held the demonstration outside Palma Town Hall yesterday afternoon (Sunday).
“The new conservative government of the PP and VOX are promoting this type of ‘entertainment’ without listening to ethical reasons or looking at statistics that show how low the interest in this type of activity” explained Eliana Guerreño, coordinator of AnimaNaturalis.
According to official data from the Ministry of Culture, the number of bullfighting shows in Palma has maintained a steady decline since 2015, with only 8% of the population attending a bullfighting show in the 2018-2019 season, and a fifth of these did so with free admission.
The same study also shows that 80% of bullfights in Spain are held in the provinces of Madrid, Toledo, Salamanca, Ávila, and Cuenca, and that currently Catalonia is considering abolishing bullfighting and they have stopped in Asturias due to Gijón’s refusal to allow them.
Regulations were approved in the Balearic Islands in 2017 to follow in the footsteps of the rest of the Autonomous Communities that have prohibited bullfighting, but the Constitutional Court reversed this movement at the request of the government of Mariano Rajoy, who had declared it as ‘cultural heritage’ in 2013.
There are now just two municipalities in Mallorca that allow bullfighting, and these are Inca and Palma.
