Spain beat giant killers Sweden to reach the Women's World Cup Final
Spain are through to the FIFA Women's World Cup final after a late goal sealed a dramatic 2-1 win over Sweden at Eden Park in Auckland this morning (Tuesday). The Spaniards showed great determination and resilience against an opponent that had already knocked out the reigning champions in the round of 16, keeping their cool against an opponent which kept the game compact and limited to very few chances.
The breakthrough came with just ten minutes left on the clock when Barcelona winger, Salma Paralluelo, put the Reds ahead with a right-footed shot from inside the area, but just as it looked like the first-ever final was within reach, there was more drama when Sweden's Rebecka Blomqvist levelled the scores just seven minutes later with an effort from a similar position.
Extra time seemed to be on the cards once again until Olga Carmona saw her chance to write her name into the history books. Following a corner kick, the Real Madrid full-back kept her composure and fired a left-footed shot from outside the area past the Swedish keeper Zećira Mušović.
Jorge Vilda's side now awaits either co-hosts Australia or European champions England, who play each other tomorrow morning, in the final, which will be played in Sydney on Sunday (August 20th). How exciting is the prospect of an England – Spain final!
