Spain has the highest number of Blue Flag beaches in the world
Spain continues to lead the way in maintaining the highest number of Blue Flag beaches on an international level. According to the Spanish Tourism Institute, Turespaña, the achievement underlines its ongoing commitment to upholding environmental standards, safety measures, and overall quality at its beaches across the country.
They highlight that since 1987, when the Blue Flags were first introduced, Spain has consistently gained recognition for 729 of its beaches. This year, ten have been awarded the one for the first time, and 22 have successfully reclaimed their Blue Flag status.
Currently, the top five Spanish Blue Flag-accredited beaches are:
· Playa El Far de Sant Cristófol, near Barcelona
· Playa La Breña in Córdoba
· Playa Torre Derribada in Murcia
· Playa Jover in Tenerife
· Playa Cancho del Fresno in Cáceres, Extremadura
The Blue Flag program has been a cornerstone of sustainable beach and marine tourism for over 35 years, setting a standard that many destinations aspire to achieve.
The organisation’s efforts align closely with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, demonstrating its integral role in advancing global sustainability.
