Spanish Government approves controversial increase in Aena airport fees
The Council of Ministers has given the green light to the annual review of Aena's fees, approving a 4.09% increase in airport charges for 2024. This decision, announced in July last year, has sparked anger among organisations including the Tourist Board and the Airline Association (ALA), as well as airlines like Ryanair.
Officials explain that they have relied on the indices published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) for the tariff review, which will take effect from March. While the original value obtained was 3.5%, after adjustments, it will be 4.09%, translating to an increase of 40 cents per passenger.
They add that discounts of between 15% and 70% are applied at airports in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, "based on flights for reasons of general interest."
Spain is cheaper than European competitors
The Council of Ministers also explained that "Aena's airports will remain the most competitive in Europe." They point out that the scale cost in Madrid or Barcelona is up to 60% lower than that of London-Heathrow, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam-Schiphol.
