The Marbella lighthouse is to become home to a new sea life education centre
The Marbella council have put out a tender to convert the lighthouse on the promenade by Avenida Antonio Belón, into a new sea life education centre. The lighthouse is currently closed and fenced off so this will be a welcome project for residents and tourists of the Costa del Sol town.
Marbella's councillor for public works, Diego López, said that the aim is to "recover this facility, which is in a privileged location, and open it up for the use and enjoyment of the public".
Three buildings cover a space of more than 2,000 square metres, with a main building that consists of two disused sections and another smaller open-plan building in addition to the lighthouse itself.
The project includes the development of the open-air interior spaces of the plot to create multi-purpose areas that will be landscaped, have water features, and shade seating areas.
The existing building on the west side of the plot, measuring 83m2, will be converted into the sea life education centre, while the main building, measuring 275m2, will be used as a new headquarters for the town hall's environmental department.
This work will allow a "flow between the Paseo Marítimo and Calle Antonio Belón, inviting pedestrians to enter and enjoy these new facilities" explained López.
The budget for the works is 989,000 euros which is fully financed by Malaga's provincial authority, the Diputación, and the deadline for submitting bids is May 31st. Once the works are awarded, the successful company will have eight months to complete them.
