The average salary in Spain now stands at 25,900 euros a year
The latest Salary Structure Survey by the National Institute of Statistics has been released today (Tuesday), which shows that the average salary in Spain stood at 25,897 euros gross (before deductions) per year in 2021, which is 2.9% more than the figure registered the previous year.
This increase is very similar to that registered by the consumer price index of 3.1% in the same year, with a deficit of only -0.2%.
However, the data shows that there are more workers in Spain who earn less than that figure than people who earn more. The amount that divides Spaniards into two halves, i.e. among those who earn above that amount and below, was 21,639 euros gross per year, +3.4% more than in 2020.
In addition, the most frequent salary in Spain is around 18,500 euros, an amount received by over 560,000 workers, which is all but the same as in 2020 as it only grew by 0.1%. The second most frequent gross annual salary was even lower at 16,487 euros which around 500,000 people earned in 2021.
One of the most striking conclusions is that once again the large gender gap still exists in salaries, with men earning an average of 28,389 euros gross per year compared to the 23,176 euros that women receive. This difference of 18.4% barely fell by 0.3% compared to the previous year.
On average women earn 5,213 euros less per year than men, the equivalent of 435 euros less in their pockets each month than their male counterparts.
