Thirteen tourists rescued after becoming trapped in a glass lift in Mijas
Thirteen tourists have been rescued by firefighters after they got stuck in one of the panoramic lifts in Mijas, in the Costa del Sol, which ground to a halt in the middle of its journey. Firefighters managed to rescue them by breaking the side glass that shrouds the elevator.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm in the lift that connects the Plaza Virgen de la Peña with Avenida del Compás, when it stopped, trapping them all inside.
According to the emergency services, the reason why the lift stopped halfway between floors has yet to be clarified but they have confirmed that it has the capacity to carry 8 people with a maximum weight of 350kg and that there were 13 people in it.
The Local Police and members of the Mijas fire brigade were dispatched to the scene after the alarm was raised, and the only option they saw viable to save them, was by breaking one of the glass sides of the elevator's outer structure, so they could get the tourists out unharmed.
Since the rescue on Sunday afternoon, the elevator has remained out of order, waiting for a repair to the window and for the necessary tests to be carried out to ensure its safe operation before it can be used by the public again.
