Three people dead after bus ploughs into pedestrians in south of Spain
A bus was involved in a fatal traffic accident at the entrance to Cadiz city centre leaving at least three people dead and two seriously injured, yesterday afternoon (Monday). According to police sources speaking to Europa Press, the incident happened at about 3.45pm when the driver of the vehicle appeared to lose control on the descent from one of the road bridges and crossed into the oncoming lane before mounting the pavement.
According to La Voz Digital, a 17-year-old young man, a 19-year-old young woman and a 60-year-old woman, were the fatal victims of the accident, and one very seriously injured person was rushed to a local hospital's intensive care unit, as were several other slightly injured people.
The 19-year-old young woman was from Castilleja de la Cuesta and the other victims, the young man and the middle-aged woman, were from Cadiz.
According to firefighters, the occupants of the bus have not suffered any injuries.
The bus driver tested negative for alcohol and drug use at the scene, and everything initially points to a mechanical failure on the bus as the cause of the accident.
One of the theories being investigated is that the bus may have suffered a brake failure on the descent from the Andalusian city's second bridge, which is very steep, and ended up invading the opposite lane, mounting the pavement and crashing into the bus stop and taxi rank area at the entrance doors of the El Corte Inglés department store.
