Tragedy strikes as 57-year-old man drowns off popular Costa Tropical Beach
In a devastating turn of events, a 57-year-old Polish man lost his life on Thursday afternoon while swimming in the vicinity of Cabria Beach in Almuñécar. The incident occurred despite the presence of yellow warning flags alerting beachgoers to strong winds and currents.
The distressing event unfolded at approximately 3:40pm when reports flooded the 112 Andalucía emergency line, signalling that a man was desperately calling for help out at sea.
Responding promptly to the distress call, the Guardia Civil, Red Cross, local fire brigade, and medical services raced to the scene. Unfortunately, by the time they reached the victim, his life could not be saved.
According to Almuñécar town hall, the man's lifeless body was discovered floating approximately 50 metres from the shore, directly in front of Curumbico Beach. Local police sources revealed that the victim initially entered the water at Cabria Beach but was swiftly carried away by the powerful currents, ultimately ending up at the neighbouring Curumbico Beach. At the time of the tragic incident, warning flags signalling hazardous conditions due to high winds and strong currents were posted along the beach.
To ascertain the exact cause of death, an autopsy will be conducted at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Granada, where the deceased's body has been transported.
The incident is a grim reminder of the importance of adhering to safety warnings at the beach, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
