Tragic incident at popular Nerja Beach claims life of elderly bather
In a sombre turn of events, an elderly bather lost his life on Thursday afternoon at El Salón beach in Nerja, a beloved destination for holidaymakers situated adjacent to the renowned Balcón de Europa viewpoint.
Although the official beach season in Nerja concluded last Sunday with the termination of the summer lifeguard service, the favourable weather conditions continued to attract thousands of local residents and tourists to this scenic coastal town on the Costa del Sol, the easternmost part of the Malaga province.
The incident unfolded at approximately 2:40 pm when numerous beachgoers spotted a man, identified as a tourist in his seventies, struggling to emerge from the water. Swiftly reacting to the situation, they managed to bring the distressed bather ashore. Local ambulance services were alerted through the 112 Andalucía emergency hotline and promptly initiated resuscitation efforts due to apparent signs of drowning.
Despite the dedicated efforts of the emergency response team, regrettably, their attempts were unsuccessful, and the elderly bather tragically passed away at the scene.
Following the incident, authorities transported the deceased individual to Malaga, where a comprehensive autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the precise cause of death. Initial speculation suggests drowning as the leading hypothesis. This unfortunate event serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of water safety, even beyond the official beach season.
