VIDEO: Bathers run for cover as shark is spotted by the shore of an Alicante beach
Residents and tourists had a scare in Orihuela yesterday morning (Thursday) when a shark was spotted swimming close to the shore off Aguamarina Beach near Alicante on the Costa Blanca.
The incident occurred at around 10:00am when the shark was spotted by a lifeguard and several bathers who were in the sea, who ran out of the water as quickly as they could when they saw the fin coming towards them.
The Orihuela Local Police were quickly dispatched to the beach and evacuated the area, but the blue shark decided not to hang around and swam back out to sea just a few minutes later.

According to the police on Twitter, everything had returned to normal at the beach by 11:25am and the green flag was on display again, and bathers could return to the water… if they wanted to!
Sightings of blue sharks are not uncommon along the Spanish coastline, and they are easily identified by their elongated body with a long, conical nose.
Blue Sharks are pelagic, meaning that they prefer the open ocean to the coastline, but sometimes they get nosey and venture closer to the shore. Historically, they have rarely been known to bite humans.
