VIDEO: Over 100 firefighters tackle major wildfire in the Costa del Sol
A forest fire that started in the Montemayor area of Benahavís yesterday afternoon (Saturday) is now under control, thanks to the concerted efforts of more than 100 firefighters and a fleet of aircraft and helicopters from the Infoca firefighting brigade.
The wildfire, which began shortly before three o'clock in the afternoon, originated in the Montemayor area near Marbella on the Costa del Sol, and posed a significant threat to the region.
A robust firefighting contingent was deployed, consisting of two seaplanes, a coordination aircraft, a Super-Puma helicopter, two semi-heavy helicopters, a light helicopter, a command helicopter, and a team of ten forest firefighter groups, totalling around a hundred personnel.
Additionally, two BRICA units (reinforcement firefighting brigade), three TOP (operations technicians), one GREMAF unit, two environmental agents, two BIIF operatives (forest fire investigation brigade), and five fire engines were engaged in the operation.
By 7:30pm, Plan Infoca's official Twitter account announced that the fire had been successfully stabilised. As night descended, air support was gradually withdrawn, while ground teams continued their relentless efforts to extinguish the flames and continue watering the area.
In a further update, Plan Infoca's official Twitter account reported that the ACO-08 coordination plane had departed from Seville airport towards the fire's source to facilitate aerial coordination of firefighting resources.
Notably, the wildfire in Benahavís was not the sole fire incident recorded in the Malaga province yesterday. Earlier in the day, another blaze erupted in Frigiliana, specifically in the Cruz del Pinto area. Firefighters battled the flames for nearly twelve hours, successfully extinguishing it by 8:00pm in the evening.
