Woman who killed her son in a Valencia Hotel poisoned his porridge
The woman who killed her 25-year-old son in a Valencia hotel on August 30th, poisoned him with a toxic substance mixed into the porridge consumed by the mentally disabled young man, according to the inspection conducted by the Scientific Police in the room where the bodies were found.
Following the gruesome discovery in a hotel room on Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, the Homicide Division of the National Police in Valencia took charge of the investigations to determine the causes of the two deaths, although all evidence pointed to the fact that the young man had been poisoned by his mother, who later committed suicide by ingesting the same toxic substance she had given to her son.
Police investigators did not find any letters that could shed light on the motive behind this crime and subsequent suicide, but the clues suggest a possible altruistic filicide. The perpetrators of these deaths, whether a mother or father of the victim, believe that their criminal act spares their child from suffering.
After experiencing depression that drives them to want to end their own lives, they "believe they cannot abandon their children and leave them alone in the world, so they end the lives of their loved ones before taking their own," says Paz Velasco, a criminologist and professor at the International University of Valencia (UIV).
After delving into the life of the alleged perpetrator, a Colombian psychologist with residency permission in Spain, the police discovered that the woman had a habit of enjoying a few days of retreat with her son from time to time. Therefore, the young man's father did not find it unusual for both of them to be absent for the 48 hours they were at the hotel.
